Job description
Performing Arts Technician – Learning and Information Services – Grade E
Purpose
To provide technical and operational support to the teaching of performance related activities and events requiring technical theatre services across all areas of University business activity.
Duties
1. To undertake care and development of equipment and resources in studios, workshops and performance spaces.
2. To undertake and demonstrate the safe use of tools, machinery, equipment and software.
3. To provide practical assistance to academic staff and students.
4. To ensure that all spaces, resources and equipment are suitable for public performance and teaching/assessment and rehearsal processes.
5. To undertake maintenance and cleaning of all equipment, working spaces and storerooms.
6. To assist in maintaining an inventory of resources.
7. To prepare studios, workshops and performance spaces for teaching, projects and performances and to remove scrap materials to the refuse point.
8. To assist students in the creation of resources, materials and props for their projects and assignments.
9. To receive, check, store and issue materials, equipment and consumables.
10. To assists university staff in research, promotional events and income generating activities.
11. To work at weekends and in the evening when required.
12. To undertake other duties as determined by the Technical Resources Manager.
Person Specification
Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviours (Essential)
• Recent experience in technical theatre, predominantly encompassing theatre lighting rigging, focusing, and plotting (Application/Interview).
• Experience in live technical operation of theatre performances with an emphasis on lighting operation (Application/Interview).
• Educated to HND level or a corresponding qualification in a relevant subject or equivalent practical experience (Application).
• Familiarity with the use of a range of current lighting fixtures (Application/Interview).
• First line maintenance and care of technical theatre equipment (Application/Interview).
• Ability to apply health and safety standards at all times (Application/Interview).
• Ability to work well in a team and independently when needed (Application/Interview).
• Ability to liaise confidently with theatre users in order to prepare the theatre spaces for effective use. (Application/Interview).
• Ability to liaise with theatre users to ensure safe use of equipment and resources (Application/Interview).
• Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, and take on other duties as required (Application/Interview).
