Job Description
Birmingham Rep is looking for Sound No 1 for their Christmas 2025 production of ‘Sherlock Holmes and the Twelve Days of Christmas ” directed by Phillip Breen with Becky Hope-Palmer, with new songs by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice.

This will be a new production with a cast of 13, and band of 5.
Throughout the engagement, the role will be required to abide by Birmingham Rep’s policies and procedures which will be supplied with the contract.
The Rep has a permanent, full-time sound & video department, responsible for all the sound and video requirements of productions at the Rep, and which supports all shows in rehearsals and performance, visiting work and events. The Rep is engaging additional sound staff for this production to supplement the in-house team and offer dedicated focus to the production. The role would be responsible to and supported by the Rep’s Head of Sound and Video.
The planned team for Sherlock Homes and the 12 Days of Christmas is planned as follows:
Sound No 1 Key responsibilities below
Sound No 2 Responsibilities include covering and deputising for Sound No 1 including mix cover, setting up RF, ensuring mics are all prepped, acting as point of contact for the music department, and taking responsibility for comms, cuelights, and CCTV.
Sound No 3 Responsibilities include assisting the Sound No 2 in their duties and providing cover for the Sound No 2.
There will also be a technical swing employed to support all departments and provide general cover.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Lead sound operator.
• Ensure the high quality of the audio of the performance.
• Supervise Sound No 2 and 3; ensuring all mics are correctly prepped.
• Ensure staffing and equipment is available for onstage rehearsals.
• Teach the mix to Sound No 2.
• Ensure all comms/cuelights/CCTV are fully functional.
• Liaise with the Rep’s Head of Sound & Video over any equipment issues, and spares and consumables purchases.
• Liaise with the Rep’s Head of Sound & Video on any HR, H&S or Rep Policy issues.
• Any other duties reasonably expected of a Sound No 1 on a large scale production.

14th November 2025 First Preview
19th November 2025 Show Lock
11th January 2026 Final Performance – there is the possibility the contract will extend for additional week if sales are good!
12th Jan 2026 Get Out – you may not be required for this
Contract Dates 3rd November – 12th January (with possible extension)
Fee: £900 buy out per week + Equity subsistence; to be invoiced to the Rep
Buy out fee is based on an average of 48 hours a week worked over the duration of the contract. Any overtime will be paid out at single time. A personal timesheet should be kept to track hours across the project.
