Since the introduction or health and safety legislation in 1974 theatre stages and their working practices have been under scrutiny, It is not always possible to apply standards required for ostensibly similar situations in other industries. Never less reasonable and practical precautions must be taken.
This Design Guide shows recommended arrangements for stage galleries and auditorium lighting bridges. In both cases functional requirements determine safeguards, which are applicable to technical rather than public ares. For this reason, access to these areas should be restricted to those staff members competent in technical practice.
The Association of British Theatre Technicians publishes a series of Code of Practice and guideline documents that illustrate best practice in the construction and operation of performance spaces.
The original Design Guide was produced after consultation with the National Industry Group of the Health and Safety Executive dealing with safety and health in entertainment and the Greater London Council. This revision is published in 2009 and replaces the previous revision in 1998.
